Position Description:

Diameter control of sapphire fibers is an important aspect of the development of some of Alcon's instruments. One way to achieve this control is to use image processing to observe and measure the size and stability of the molten zone during fiber growth, which are critical parameters to achieve optimum crystal quality.

The internship is based on developing a machine learning model enabling the obtention of fibers with diameter fluctuations less than 3%.

The Alcon team is looking for a talented and motivated intern to join us onsite for summer 2025 at the Lake Forest, CA location.

Alcon interns will have the opportunity to not only gain industry experience and network with other Alcon professionals. They will also have the chance to make a real-world impact by working on meaningful projects that will help patients and customers see brilliantly. Key Responsibilities:

• Data collection using cameras and visualization software.
• Image processing and data analysis using MATLAB, Python, etc...
• Develop machine learning model based on the collected data.
• Implement the model using LabVIEW or Python to control growth process.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be enrolled in an accredited university or college for at least one semester prior to internship or co-op, and at least one additional semester following internship or co-op.
• Must be pursuing at least a bachelor's level degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Optical Engineering or related major.
• Academic performance: Minimum cumulative GPA 2.8/4.0
• Demonstrated leadership skills (i.e. extracurricular activities or projects)
• Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (students on an F1 visa with CPT can be accommodated)
• Ability to commit to a full time (40 hrs. per week) Intern position.
