Summary

You will serve as a Chemist in the Laboratory Division of the Quality Assurance Department, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You may be required to lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • You may be required to perform work in confined spaces.
  • You may be required to perform work at unusual heights.
  • You may be required to maintain radiation or contamination worker qualifications.
  • Incumbent may also serve as a chemical expert in an area of technical cognizance requiring specialized knowledge and experience.

Qualifications

GS-07:
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: laboratory experience applying chemical principles, theories and/or practices in performing chemical analysis and testing; experience calibrating and/or operating analytical instruments; and developing laboratory documents or methods to produce and report results.

GS-09:
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: laboratory experience performing routine, limited chemical analysis or tests; performing physical measurements; completing routine calculations such as determining concentration; and producing laboratory reports.

Education

Basic Requirements for GS-09 and GS-07:

A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
