  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Perform new installations, troubleshooting, adjusting, testing, modifying, and repair of marine electrical systems and equipment on board conventional and non-conventional service craft and boats (electrical power control and distribution systems, lighting systems, IC and alarm systems, actuating circuits, and control circuits for functional systems, such as, radar, engines, and fire suppression systems); 2) Use marine electrical equipment, such as switchboards, electrical panels, switches, fuse panels, light fixtures, radar units, antennas, generators, pumps, motors, batteries and battery chargers, windshield wiper motors, heaters, starters, alternators, alarm panels, alarm indicators shore power components, electrical meters, VHF radios, and air compressors.
Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair marine electronic navigation systems and networking equipment, NMEA 2000 installations; 3) Ability to read and follow wiring diagrams. Electrical certification such as ABYC standards desired; and 4) Ability to assist in the operation of small craft, launching and recovering craft in support of maintenance.

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

You may be required to attend the CNIC Shore Installation management Basic Boat Coxswain (SIMBBC) course as a boat crew member and complete the Personal Qualifications Standards for SIMBBC. You must qualify as a 2nd class swimmer or complete Basic Survivor Training (BST) prior to taking this course.

A forty-hour work week is typical for this position.

This position is subject to working odd or rotating shifts and weekends.

Physical Demands: You will frequently handle objects weighing up to 44 pounds. You will occasionally work in hard-to-reach places requiring awkward and cramped or strained positions. Repairs and installations are from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. You will be required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. You must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over three-foot bulkheads on a rocking tug. Position requires peripheral vision and the ability to distinguish between basic colors. Must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of tugboat and ship operations.

Work Environment: Work is performed outside in all kinds of weather and inside craft or buildings. You will be subjected to hot sun, spray, rain, sleet and ice. You may be assigned to work in areas where contact with sewage waste is possible. You will be exposed to possible injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion or elevated work areas; possible strains, cuts and bruises; electrical shock; industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment; skin and eye irritation and eye hazards.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
