HDR is looking for an entry-level Hydrologist to join our Water Resources team in Sacramento, CA. Candidates for the position should have knowledge and familiarity in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and analysis, with a focus on water supply modeling and climate change analyses. Our clients include local, state, and federal agencies.
Our team is growing and have a range of challenging and innovating projects. We work within multi-disciplinary teams on projects related to flood management, water supply, FERC relicensing, and ecological enhancements, providing hydrologic and reservoir operations modeling, including hydrology development and analysis; reservoir simulation, optimization and re-operation; climate change modeling; and ensemble and statistical analysis. The preferred candidate would have experience in a combination of these subject areas.
Skills such as scripting (such as VBA, R, Jython/Python) and GIS, HEC software (such as HEC-SSP, HEC-HMS, HEC-ResSim and both HEC-RAS 1D and 2D), climate change analytical tools and datasets (such as Global Climate Models and downscaling methods), water temperature modeling, linear programming and optimization would be considered beneficial.
Primary Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to be a key part of project delivery teams;
- Manage small to medium-sized tasks on projects
- Drafts technical memos and reports
- Conducts hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and modeling
- Helps design and conduct field studies and be responsible for data collection, compilation and analysis for a variety of hydrology-related projects
- Effectively interacts with clients and peers
- Must be able to work independently, but also enjoy working in a collaborative team environment.
- Must have strong writing skills and good internal review processes.
- Will perform other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Water Resources or closely related field
• Knowledge and familiarity with GIS, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, Statistical Analysis Software, Programming languages
• Microsoft Office skills, Excel, Word
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and with a project team to completion of a task
• Strong communication and listening skills• Ability to handle multiple assignments
• An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
Preferred Qualifications:
• MS degree
• Experience with hydrologic analysis on watershed scale
• Experience with water infrastructure planning studies, extreme hydrology, and/or consequence analysis
• Experience with climate change analytical tools and datasets.
• Experience with reservoir and system modeling.
• Experience with risk-based planning and risk informed decision making.
• Familiarity with integration of resiliency into the planning process
