This position is located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division.

Career seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from the beginning of November through end of August, approx 10 months in pay status, and will be in non-pay for the remainder of the year.

  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. Important: Please, do not provide a copy of your driver's license at this time. If selected for a position, you will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with a valid medical certification, plus Hazmat, Tanker, and Air-Brake endorsements no later than one year from the official start date of this position.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 14 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass Respirator fit test.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

You must meet the selective placement factor to qualify for this position:
  • You must be able to possess a Class-B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with valid medical certification and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT), Tanker and Air-Brake endorsements within one year of start date of this position.
In addition to the selective placement factor listed above, to qualify for this position, you must also have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  6. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  7. Knowledge of Materials

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

In the event of an accident while traveling in a government aircraft, the payable benefits of a private life insurance policy may be affected.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration and noise of the equipment and jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing more than 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Incumbent is required to make repairs which often require working in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions. Work performed frequently involves standing, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and working in tight spaces for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Works both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work frequently includes exposure to inclement weather, including rain, snow, mud, hot and cold temperatures. Frequently exposed to irritation and discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents, cold and dampness. Frequent potential for exposure to burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Frequent potential for exposure to insects, toxic plants, bears, moose, and other wildlife. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment to minimize exposure and injury. May be required to work weekends and holidays as part of their regular tour of duty and should generally be available for emergency callout. Incumbent will be required to camp overnight and work in remote areas of the park and preserve for up to 14 nights at a time to complete projects.
