Job Description
Under supervision of the Administrative Supervisor and/or Clinical Supervisor (physician and advance practice provider), and in a manner in line with company policies and procedures, federal, and state regulations, and N BOTC guidelines performs orthopedic procedures which include but are not limited to applying casts, splints, braces, and bandages, in all orthopedic areas which include the cast room, emergency room and operating room. Coordinates activities and serves as an orthopedic resource to management, and internal and external customers of the department which includes training of other orthopedic personnel, patient education, and a resource for the ordering supplies and equipment.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Orients Orthopedic Technicians and newly hired Senior Ortho Technicians to assist the providers with all routine orthopedic procedures and to meet standards of job description, instructs medical students and residents in plaster techniques and teaches advanced plaster techniques for Orthopedic Residency Program.
- Coordinates activities of the cast room with other clinic and hospital functions. Acts as a resource for non-department personnel in the care of orthopedic patients and use of traction equipment in accordance with department policies. May assist providers in coordination of education programs.
- Recommends reorder points for replenishment of rotating standard stock and non-stock cast room supplies. Signs and forwards purchase requisitions to department head, evaluates necessity for acquisition of new or additional equipment for the department. Recommends purchases of capital equipment. Evaluates new items such as plaster and ready-made braces to ensure compliance with pre-determined standards.
- Applies all types of casts, splints, braces, bandages and slings by determining proper positioning, angulation and type of device according to the instruction of the provider and pre-determined orthopedic procedures and techniques.
- Attends to patients during follow-up visits by application of casts, splints, etc. as assessed and ordered by a provider.
- Sets up traction apparatus as directed, noting type of traction, positioning, and weight to be used. Checks condition of inpatients on a regular basis to determine possible problems, Notifies provider as necessary and makes adjustments as directed.
- Assists provider in Operating Room in application of casts as directed. Assists provider in Emergency Room, Cast Room, and Operating Room. Follows sterile technique, such as removing sutures and/or staples (after RN or provider assessment) from superficial incisions, closed reduction of fractures, wound debridement and pin insertion, applies casts as directed, positions and preps patient, assembles necessary equipment and instruments, applies proper dressing as directed, passes instruments and assists provider as directed, follows sterile technique for operating room procedures.
- Furnishes, fits, and provides written instructions to patients in the use of crutches, canes and other devices and documents in patients electronic medical record.
- Maintains and ensures operational readiness of equipment and supplies.
- Maintains clean and orderly work area according to established procedures.
- Will assist the provider in all phases of orthopedic or podiatry care.
- Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- One year experience within the past three (3) years as an Ortho Tech and must take and pass departmental skills validation for competencies as established.
Education
- N/A.
License, Certification, Registration
- Basic Life Support
- Orthopedic Technologist Certificate from National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists
Additional Requirements:
- Knowledge of orthopedic terminology and procedures required.
- Ability to lift fifty (50 lbs.) and apply most kinds of casts, braces, and traction required.
