Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Technical Editor to be based in Phoenix, AZ; Murray, UT; or Denver, CO .
JOB SUMMARY:
The technical editor position will be responsible for editing and formatting documents ranging from simple technical memoranda to multivolume environmental reports, to persuasive client-facing proposals.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Edit and format reports (usually containing text, tables, maps and other graphics, and appendices) for correctness, completeness, organization, clarity, consistency, grammar, and conformity with company, client, or agency style guidelines and requirements
- Ensure accuracy in formatting, grammar, spelling, tense, punctuation, citations, and readability of deliverables per industry standards
- Develop and utilize style guides and templates
- Ensure adherence to all established document control and technical editing standard operating procedures, checklists, and styles
- Perform substantive editing to address accuracy and completeness of technical information, and enhance clarity, tone, persuasiveness, and effectiveness of presentation
- Format documents, including figures, tables, appendices, automated tables of contents, margins, pagination, headers/footers, footnotes, automated captions, and automated styles
- Prepare and compile documents from multiple sources (and formats) into Adobe Acrobat PDFs, including bookmarking, application of headers and footers, pagination, and property changes
- Create 508-compliant documents, including implementing formatting best practices early in the document process to help ensure documents pass 508-compliance checks with relative ease
- Work quickly under tight deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality
- Communicate efficiently and effectively with technical staff, project managers, and/or marketing staff to resolve content questions, changes in the schedule, and budget constraints
- Collaborate with other editors and/or authors to track content changes, ensure consistency of voice and content, and meet deadlines
- While the focus of this position will be technical editing, there will be, at times, overlap with technical writing responsibilities that include writing logically sound, technically reliable, and readily comprehensible documents.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- AA/AS (US) + 1 year of relevant experience
- BA/BS in English, Communications, Journalism, or related fields
- 2+ years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
- Strong command of the English language, exceptional writing and editing skills, and in-depth knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and composition rules
- Excellent editorial skills with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and detail
- Skilled at communicating complex ideas in clear, concise, and compelling language and translating technical jargon into plain language for broad audiences
- Able to multi-task efficiently and complete assignments accurately and on time
- Skilled in time-management and working under strict and occasionally aggressive deadlines
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Word, especially Track Changes and Styles functions, Microsoft Excel and intermediate skills with Adobe InDesign
- Proficiency using industry-standard style guides and comfortable with in-house and/or client or agency style guides
- Ability to prepare documents for audience-targeted readability (e.g., general public, client-specific, regulatory authorities)
- Knowledge and basic experience in 508 compliance
