This position requires you to wear an officially-approved uniform while in a duty status. An applicant appointed to this position must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position. May require a one-year probationary period. Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. This is a Bargaining Unit position. Qualifications Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: This is an administrative position in an organization having a firefighting mission, and is in an established career path. Prior firefighting experience, as gained by substantial service in a primary firefighter position or equivalent experience outside the Federal government is a MANDATORY PREREQUISITE for incumbents of this position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. GS-9 GRADE LEVEL Specialized Experience: Worked closely with dispatch and fire management staff to track and monitor commitment and availability of resources, and maintained a system to status and prioritize incidents and resource allocation. Performed a wide variety of limited operational projects to address a broad range of intelligence wildland fire suppression, preparedness, and prescribed fire activities within the Area. Prepared daily briefings to include information on large, multiple or complex incidents, resource availability, fuels analysis forecasts, and other significant or major events. Created, utilized, and maintained various computer programs and filed in agency specific programs and specific computer systems and provided appropriate information and assistance to users in the geographical area. -OR- Education: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. GS-8 GRADE LEVEL Specialized Experience: Prioritizing distribution of aid, supplies, and equipment in cases of simultaneous wildland fire incidents. Maintaining and assisting in developing dispatching guides, staffing and action guides, mobilization plans, fire management plans, directives, and/or reference materials. Coordinating exchanges of information with other federal agencies as well as municipal and state fire and law enforcement agencies. -OR- Education: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Firefighter Retirement: This is a SECONDARY/Administrative fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. YOU MUST LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN A PRIMARY POSITION. Physical Demands: Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency level with irregular breaks/mealtimes are frequent, prolonged demands of the job. You are subject to work shifts of 12-14 hours per day for extensive periods. Vehicle and aircraft travel associated with field visits and other administrative travel may be required. Work Environment: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial/government vehicles, (e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals). The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
